I've never messed with Reaper but know it's pretty popular because it's fairly inexpensive and they have a free trial version deal kind of thing.

I think there is either a demo Reaper install or it's simple to get running in there. Ubuntustudio has audacity installed (with all the effects) and several other studio tools, pedal sims, amp sims, DAW, etc. Ardour 5.0 can be parallel-installed with older versions of the program, and does not use.
